Having been in the business of designing and making wooden beds for more than 30 years, we've adopted our own combination of traditional joinery and contemporary technology to build wooden-slatted beds with the style and elegance to look great in your home and the strength and durability to provide years of service.
Selecting timber and building your bed
All our beds are made from kiln dried Scandinavian
pine from sustainable sources. This means
that every tree harvested for timber is replaced by the planting of
another, helping to maintain biodiversity.
The basic construction of a slatted wooden
bed is simple. Four bedposts stand at the
corners. The two at the head end are spanned
by some kind of headboard, even if the
design requires little more than a cross
member. The same arrangement is repeated
at the foot end. Two long side rails then connect the head and foot
ends, one on each side. This creates a rigid rectangular frame, raised
from the floor by the posts. Fixed to the inside of each side rail,
there is a sturdy wooden batten, to support the slats. For extra support,
on our double and king-size beds, there is also a central beam, running
from the centre of the headboard to the footboard. The slats are then
arranged along the frame to support the mattress.
The advantages of this construction over
a divan bed are many. First of all, there
are no springs to wear out in the base,
and the wooden slats actually provide superior
support. Slats also allow free circulation of air under the mattress,
keeping it well ventilated and so is more hygienic. Furthermore, timber
slatted beds are easily dismantled and transported. Another advantage,
of course, is the handy storage space available beneath the bed.
We
combine the best of traditional and modern
joinery techniques in the production of your bed. Traditional mortise-and-tenon
joints are employed in the making of our
headboards and footboards. For the assembly
of your bed, however (joining side rails to headboard and footboard)
we use the ‘Firm Fix’ patented connector system, which was designed
and manufactured by a specialist-engineering firm located in Nottinghamshire.
'Firm Fix' fittings are now generally considered
to be the best bed assembly system in the world, producing a rock
solid joint, capable of supporting the weight of a car without loosening.
The connectors are completely concealed within the bed structure,
so that there are no unsightly fittings to spoil the appearance, and
you can disassemble and reassemble your bed countless times without
any weakening of the joints.
Designing your bed
Our design philosophy has always been to
keep it simple. We try to avoid unnecessary
frills or carvings. We believe that this
not only keeps down prices, but also makes for better design.
When
we add a new bed to our range, the first
step is to build a prototype in our workshop.
This is then placed in our northwest London
showroom to give customers an opportunity
to comment. We then take their views into account and, where necessary,
make adjustments to the design. The prototype remains in our showroom,
where we "live
with it" for a few weeks. We consider
this cooling off period to be a crucial
part of the design evolution. Only if we're
still happy with the new model after this period, do we incorporate
it into our range.
